Station 1 - Learn to Read

A beginning reader doesn't recognize whole words yet. Each one has to be decoded, letter by letter. To feel that, some common letters below have been swapped for symbols. Read the sentence out loud as fast as you can.

This is the point of the station: by the time you finished decoding, the meaning was gone. A fluent reader answers that question in about 3 seconds without effort. Now imagine every page of every subject feeling like this.

Station 2 - Letters That Won't Hold Still

Many people with dyslexia describe letters that flip, drift, or swap. The b becomes d, the p becomes q, and words shimmer. Try to read the paragraph below, then flip the effect off to feel the difference.

There's no wrong answer here. Most people notice they were sounding out single letters, losing their place, and re-reading lines. That constant re-work is what tires a dyslexic reader out long before the content ever sinks in.

Station 3 - Broken Word Shapes · orthographic dyslexia

Skilled readers recognize whole words instantly by their shape - the orthographic route. In orthographic (surface) dyslexia that fast whole-word recognition is weak, so even familiar words have to be worked out letter by letter. To feel it, we've broken the word shapes below with jumbled case and fonts, so your instant recognition can't fire. Read it out loud, as fast as you can.

The letters and sounds never changed - only the familiar shape of each word did. That alone forced you back to slow letter-by-letter reading. A student with orthographic dyslexia sees ordinary print but their brain can't lock onto the shapes, so every page reads like this one did.

Station 4 - Which Spelling Is Right? · orthographic dyslexia

Orthographic memory stores the exact letter-string of a word so you can spell it and know it "looks right." When that store is weak, you can still sound a word out, but every phonetically-plausible spelling looks equally correct. Pick the correctly spelled word for each meaning - quickly, by feel.

Notice the hesitation - and that a couple probably looked right when they weren't. For a fluent speller this is automatic. Without solid orthographic memory, that flicker of doubt lands on every word a student tries to write, which is why spelling and writing speed both collapse.

Station 5 - Write With Mirrors · visual-motor

This station recreates what happens when a student's visual feedback and motor control don't line up. The brain knows the letters, but the writing hand doesn't get the directions it expects. Try it: write the target word in the box. Your ink appears mirror-flipped, as if you were watching your hand through a mirror. For a moment, your brain and your hand are working against each other.

Station 6 - Too Many Rules to Write · dysgraphia

Dysgraphia isn't about ideas or intelligence - it's that the mechanics of writing never become automatic. When letter formation, spacing, and rules all demand conscious attention, there's nothing left over for what you actually want to say. To feel that split, copy the sentence below while obeying two fussy rules at the same time.

You almost certainly stopped thinking about the sentence and thought only about the rules - and it still came out with errors, slowly. That is the trade a student with dysgraphia makes on every line: the harder they concentrate on forming the writing, the less capacity they have for the content, and vice-versa.

Station 7 - The Jittery Pen · dysgraphia

For many students with dysgraphia the hand simply won't reliably produce what the brain intends. Grip, pressure, and control take enormous effort, so letters come out shaky, uneven, and slow even when the spelling is known cold. This pen adds that unreliability: it jitters and skips. Try to write the word neatly, on the line, inside the box.

Now compare it to your normal handwriting. Same word, same knowledge, but the output is exhausting to produce and hard to read. When a teacher sees only the messy result, the effort behind it is invisible - which is exactly why dysgraphia is so often mistaken for carelessness.

Debrief - What just happened

Each station isolates one piece of the load a dyslexic student carries at once, all day.

Decoding steals attention from meaning

When reading isn't automatic, working memory is spent on the letters themselves. Comprehension, the actual point of reading, gets whatever is left. That's why a bright child can decode a passage and still not be able to tell you what it said.

Effort is invisible from the outside

A student who is exhausted after one paragraph can look lazy, distracted, or careless. The simulation makes the hidden effort visible for a few minutes. For them it never turns off.

Orthographic dyslexia: decoding isn't the whole story

Stations 3 and 4 target a different profile. Some students sound words out fine but can't recognize or recall the exact spelling - the whole-word, visual side of reading. They read slowly, spell phonetically ("frend," "sed"), and can't tell when a word looks wrong. It often hides behind decent verbal skills, so it gets missed.

Dysgraphia is a writing disorder, not messy handwriting

Stations 6 and 7 isolate dysgraphia: the mechanics of writing never automate, so forming letters competes with composing ideas, and the motor output is slow and uneven regardless of effort. A dysgraphic student can be a strong thinker whose written work never reflects it. Typing, scribes, and reduced copying aren't excuses - they let the ideas out.

Accommodations are access, not advantage

Extra time, audiobooks, typing, and structured phonics instruction don't lower the bar. They remove the mirror so the student can show what they actually know.

What actually helps

Dyslexia is lifelong and neurological, but it responds strongly to structured, explicit, multisensory reading instruction (often called Orton-Gillingham based). Early identification matters. If this felt hard for you as an adult who already reads, it's worth asking what your child's day is like.
